Whimsigoth: The witch style of the ’90s

I finally got around to making this fringe bag DIY which I started planning many months ago. Unfortunately, 2019 was a pretty terrible year for me in many ways. After the loss of my beloved grandmother the year before I began having a lot more anxiety than I used to. I had panic attacks several times a day and this went on for months. . . .
Brooches and pins are not exactly a new thing, but they come and go like all other trends. I actually remember when it was last trending, or at least when it started. It was the year 2008, and it was thanks to the release of the first “Sex and the city” movie. It’s hard not to remember the first scene, when Carrie walks the street of Manhattan in her white and gold one shoulder dress, with a large flower. I remember her gorgeous Dior sandals that I wanted so bad.. Anyway, this gorgeous dress led to many people (including me) wearing large flower brooches. I still have my biggest flower brooch and now I might just be able to use it again.
In order to complete an outfit you need something that holds everything together. Something that has a little bit of everything in your outfit. Usually this means it consist of the same colors (and shades.) For example; see the picture below.
The brooches I’m wearing are black and red, one of them has rhinestones on it (silver). Because my sweater is red, the skirt has black, red and silver in it and my accessories are black, these brooches are perfect. The brooches add that final touch to the outfit and keeps it from looking incomplete.
Because a brooch can look a million different ways, and because you can easily make them yourself, they’re the perfect way to personalize something. They’re easy to add to anything and if you need some ideas, here is a list:
If you like my brooches, see how I made them in this post. . . .
By mixing styles to create an outfit you can create a very interesting look. I’m not an expert on different styles but the ones I know, I know quite well. I don’t think every item can be sorted in to one style but it’s really more about pairing up things that you usually wouldn’t anyway.
My favorite way to mix styles is by wearing something laid back like a hoodie or sweatpants (or even pyjamas which is very trend right now) with a pair of heels. A look like this says a lot about who I am which is probably why I love it so much. What I mean is that the clothes I prefer to wear are super comfy soft things that keeps me warm, but at the same time I hate wearing flats.
Mixing styles can be done in many different ways. You can mix as many as you want (but I wouldn’t exaggerate because it might look messy.) When I was around ten or eleven I had a black, red and white plaid dress with puffy shoulders. Whenever I wore this dress I paired it with a vinyl belt and a plaid headband. I loved the mix of styles in this dress because it had two obvious styles mixed in one piece (pretty and edgy.) I kinda wish I still had that dress (but in my current size), it was pretty special to me.
The skort I’m wearing today is yet another thing that I bought on Malta. I have now showed you everything just in time for a new trip to Malta. I am currently busy getting ready and we’re leaving this Saturday. I will try to post something everyday on Instagram so make sure to follow me.
