7 Layered outfits for the winter season
All of my life I have struggled to keep warm during the winter because I am someone who is cold most of the time. I remember, when I was little, my mom would make me wear tights underneath my jeans and snow pants over them when I went outside. Although that annoyed me back then, I know now that’s the reason I didn’t freeze to death. And so, layered outfits has always been something I’ve needed in my life. But it was when I got older that I realized layered outfits could look good too.
For today’s post, I have prepared seven outfits. All of them with a few different ways to create layered outfits. I have had some of these outfits hanging on my clothing rack for a few months, and now I finally get to make use of them.
Things to keep in mind
- As long as your pants or jeans aren’t too tight, you can always add tights underneath.
- You can wear a basic top underneath to keep warm.
- If you have a basic jeans + t-shirt + cardigan combination, you could try adding a vest, skinny scarf or belt to give the look a twist.
- Make sure that you are showing all the layers (unless it’s a basic meant to keep you warm).
- Play around with different hem and sleeve lengths when layering.
- Make sure you can still see the shape of your body. I most cases a belt at the waist will do the trick.
Top it off with faux fur
I’m going to start with this black outfit with a pop of bright red. In this outfit, I started with a long sleeved lace top. If you need something warmer you can go for a classic long sleeved v neck top instead. But it can be in color or print you’d like.
On top of the lace top, I added a sleeveless v neck top with seam details. The peplum hemline adds something extra. Finally, I added a bright red faux fur jacket. To complete the look I wore a pair of black pants, gold earrings, red sunglasses, red boots, and red lipstick.
Layering with a scarf
Next up is an outfit that doesn’t have a lot of layers but has a good base for layering. I paired my wide leg black jeans with a white graphic print t-shirt. On top, I added this long plaid scarf (which is actually two almost identical scarves pinned together, making it twice as long).
Once again if you need more layers, you can add it. Either wear a long sleeve underneath the t-shirt or add a cardigan on top. If you want yet another fashionable layer, you can add a vest on top. As you can see I went with the French theme and added a red beret and red lipstick. I paired the look with black pumps in which you could add fun socks if it’s too cold.
Black layers
Next is an all-black outfit. The key to succeeding with a black layered outfit is texture. Try to use pieces made from different fabric and materials. For example faux fur, leather, denim. Try mixing shiny fabric with matt fabric. I started my outfit with a bustier top and a pair of black (or rather a dark grey with black areas).
The first layer I added was a thin black duster coat which is a favorite in my closet because of how versatile it is. On top the duster coat I added my black faux fur vest that I made a while back (super proud 😀 ). I made sure that the collar of the coat was layered on top of the vest. This adds something extra to the outfit. I paired this outfit with black pumps, red lipstick, and my gorgeous Lele Sadoughi earrings.
Plaid on top
For this outfit, I had the thought that layering to keep warm means not showing skin. This is accurate and necessary but it doesn’t mean it can’t look sexy. The proof is this outfit. The base is black (fleece lined if needed) tights and a zip turtleneck.
On top of that, I added my plaid crop top which I bought for Paris earlier this year. And my yellow plaid skirt with a zipper down the middle. I also added a pair of white boots for an unexpected twist, but black would work just as well. I also wore some hoop earrings, red lipstick, and a big hair clip.
Layered skirt
This outfit is one of my favorites as it really shows how layering can look really interesting. The base is a long sleeve (which wouldn’t really be showing but adds warmth) and a pair of mesh leggings with built-in shorts (if it’s too cold you can wear thin skin colored tights underneath).
On top of the leggings, I added my tulle/mesh skirt with layered ruffles at the bottom. I love the way these pieces look together. Then on top of that, I added a longer black sweatshirt with ribbons and large eyelet details. I also wore silver hoops and red lipstick. Thanks to the ruffles this outfit looks like it has more layers than it actually does.
The button up jumpsuit
So for this next outfit I started off with a long-sleeved top (or at least, I would if I were to wear this outfit). On top of that, I added this really pretty (but itchy) cardigan. It is a really old one that I got years ago after my sister. I buttoned it almost all the way.
On top of the cardigan, I wore a denim jumpsuit.
Here I had a choice. You can either wear it buttoned all the way or just a few buttons. Another option is to go for a more relaxed look and let the top of it hang loose like I did here. >>>>
Either way I really like this outfit. I wore it with dark brown lipstick, black boots, hexagon-shaped silver earrings, and a small rhinestone necklace to match the buttons on the cardigan.
Dress over sweater
The final outfit has black tights and a black knitted off shoulder sweater as a base. When wearing a sweater as a base it’s best to make sure it isn’t too thick or it might look bulky.
On top of the sweater I added this beautiful zebra (or tiger?) print pinafore dress. I feel like pinafore dresses were made for layering and it’s definitely a good piece to have in your closet. This one has ruffles which add to the layered feel. I paired this outfit with my red snake print boots, a black skinny scarf tied as a choker and gold statement earrings.
That was it for this post and I hope you got some inspiration from these outfits. I know we’re close to Christmas right now and I wish I could have come up with some party outfits in time. Unfortunately, I’m struggling to find some inspiration myself right now and I have postponed this post since the end of November. Hopefully, next year will bring some new inspiration and motivation.
