DIY Fringe Bag
I finally got around to making this fringe bag DIY which I started planning many months ago. Unfortunately, 2019 was a pretty terrible year for me in many ways. After the loss of my beloved grandmother the year before I began having a lot more anxiety than I used to. I had panic attacks several times a day and this went on for months.
I’m a lot better now and so far 2020 is going really well for me (knock on wood.) I have gotten more into my bullet journal which helps me organize my life as well as keeping me busy when I need it.
Behind the fringe bag
Thinking back on when I got the idea for this fringe bag. It was at the beginning of 2019 that I saw a picture of a long fringe bag by Cult Gaia. I immediately thought of my old black fringe clutch that I made years ago. It’s one of my favorite creations because of the materials I used (and because it looks awesome.)
It was 2013 when I woke up in the middle of the night with an idea, of how to DIY hard clutches. When I finally remembered the next morning that I had this cool idea I wasn’t sure if I wrote it down. I spent most of the day trying to figure out what this idea was until I found it in my all-in notes app.
I had written it down among a bunch of other creative ideas I had. What I had written was “Hard clutches (VHS cases?)” with this 😬 emoji after it. I guess I wasn’t sure if it was a brilliant idea or a ridiculous one. Maybe a ridiculously brilliant idea? Honestly, I’m still not sure after all these years but someday I want to make a post about it. I just need to figure out the best way to do it first..
To make that black fringe clutch I used a pair of fringe curtains that I found second hand. I simply cut them to size and glued them onto a black VHS case. But like I said more on that another time.
For now, I’m gonna show you how I made this red fringe bag. I used a pair of red fringe curtains that I found online for this. It’s not a very detailed description as I didn’t plan how I would make it beforehand. If you already have a bag you would like to use, you can easily sew on some fringe to that instead.
To make a fringe bag you will need:
The first thing that I did was to remove the handles off of the bag that I bought for this DIY. The only reason I bought it was because I couldn’t find a place to buy this type of bag handles anywhere.
After that, I took the rest of the bag to use it as a base for my bag. I cut out some fabric and pinned it around the base. When I was happy with it I took out the base and sewed the fabric on its own. And then I added the base back in.
I then cut and sewed two pieces of fabric that I wrapped around the handles. And then I pinned them to the bag and sewed them on.
I made a few adjustments to make the bag look cleaner. I made sure the base was attached to the outer fabric and I added a layer of fabric on the inside as well.
When I was happy with how the bag looked all that was left was to add the fringe. I added two fringe panels on each side. One close to the top of the bag and the other one right below it.
Finally I cut off the fringes for a more appropriate length (as they where very long at first, being curtains and all..)
